Governments all over the world have their hands full trying to deal with swine flu, and the academic policy ‘think-tank’ known as the Heartland Institute has decided to help out by… organizing yet another ‘conference’ promoting climate change inaction!

The Third International Conference on Climate Change will be held in Washington, DC on June 2, 2009 at the Washington Court Hotel, 525 New Jersey Avenue NW. It will call attention to widespread dissent to the asserted “consensus” on various aspects of climate change and global warming.

I guess they can’t call this upcoming one-day (!) ‘conference’ the “2009 International Conference on Climate Change”, because they’d already used up that name themselves last month. (And “2009b International Conference on Climate Change” will just sound silly…)

Oh, and this ‘conference’ has co-sponsors, in a non-monetary sense — just like the last one:

Cosponsoring organizations are given a limited number of free tickets to the conference; if you are a member of any of the cosponsoring organizations, consider asking them about the availability of free tickets.

And on the “Welcome” page (emphasis mine):

Allied organizations have been invited to be cosponsors, to help supply speakers and promote the event to their members and supporters.

That was blunt.

I suspect this was scheduled as a means of making it appear that Heartland is keeping up with the DC think-tanks in the developing anti-Waxman-Markey wingnut feeding frenzy, i.e it has everything to do with competition for funding. If I were Dr. Kochenscaife I’d be wondering whether the larger conferences provide enough bang for the buck relative to the same dollars spent in DC. The downside of this move for Heartland is that it unavoidably devalues future conferences.

how do you devalue a valueless….

That was going to be a great joke but can’t think of a good ending.

    Abdourahman Sallah:

Thanks. Well, this is just a blog, and I don’t run any climate change programs here; I merely post things about climate change (and other things) which I find interesting. Let me know if you have any further questions.
